Heritage Lottery Fund: Heritage Grants

Grants over £50,000:

Programme Objectives

To qualify for a grant your project must:

  • help people to learn about their own and other people's heritage (learning).

The project must also do either or both of the following:

  • conserve the UK's diverse heritage for present and future generations to experience and enjoy (conservation);
  • help more people, and a wider range of people, to take an active part in and make decisions about heritage (participation).

Eligibility

  • Non-profit organisations including local authorities, educational institutions, voluntary associations and charities are all eligible to apply.
  • If private owners are involved in a project, HLF expect the public benefit to be greater than any private gain.

Timetable

  • This is a rolling funding programme
  • All projects go through a two-round assessment process.
  • From April 2009 all bids over £1million will be decided by the national Board
  • Assessment of First Round bids takes three months.
  • Decisions are made at the next available meeting following the assessment process (country and regional committee are every three months, the board every two months)
  • Applicants have between 0 and 18 months to develop project between First Round approval and Second Round application.
  • Assessment of Second Round bids takes three months
  • Decisions are made at the next available meeting following the assessment process (country and regional committee are every three months, the board every two months)
  • Bids for grants in excess of £5 million are considered as part of a competitive batch each year and you must contact HLF to discuss these bids in advance. [NB: HLF has published an indicative annual budget for these awards of £20 million up to 2013]

Criteria

  • The grant request must be over £50,000.
  • Minimium partnership funding of 10% of the total project costs is required for grants of up to £1million, this rises to 25% for a grant of over £1 million.
  • Partnership funding can be a mixture of cash and 'in kind', for example, time, materials, premises. Atleast 5% of the partnership funding must be in cash.
  • Applicants can bid for development funding in the First Round to help develop the project for application at Second Round.
