Hampshire Photographic Project

A county-wide project to digitise 10,000 historic Hampshire photographs on a range of themes reflecting life in Hampshire spanning around 100 years, selected from the collections of over 30 local organisations, including Hampshire County Council's archive, museum and library collections, local history societies and independent museums. Also created an online learning resource, alongside improvements to the preservation of the originals.

Outcomes

Learning resource of 10,000 historic photographs with supporting documentation, accessible via dedicated web pages and the Hampshire Record Office's online catalogue. Facility for studying these images in of fine detail by accessing high-resolution images at Hampshire Record Office and locally. Improved preservation of originals through reduced handling, improved storage and possible deposit at Hampshire Record Office. Widened awareness of archive heritage through participants' involvement and by those accessing the resource. Outreach activities including exhibitions and talks, bringing the resource to a wider audience. A copying service for the images, where feasible.
